Greetings, dear friends!I have been really blessed recently by the responses I'm receiving from many of you concerning our "Names of God" Bible study. Thank you for all the positive feedback and even the lovingly offered criticisms! Several of you requested print copies of the studies, so I'm instituting another improvement to the newsletter. Beginning with this month's study, I am including a link for a print-friendly copy of each "Names of God" Bible study (that means they will contain only the Bible study topic and won't have any hypertext links in them). Since I didn't do this for the first three studies, I'm including links for those also. I hope this will help you, at least for the short term. Later, I may create these studies in Adobe PDFs which you can then download directly to your computer. In addition to the "thank you's", two subscribers offered the following opinions: "Watchman Paul" observed, "...in our prayer life it is the how we know God that is more important than speaking the literal translation that matters most to God...(Jeremiah 31:34)." And another friend wrote, "What matters is that in our hearts, we know that GOD is LORD OF ALL!" Thanks to both of you for reminding me of the importance of keeping a proper perspective during this study. Certainly, you're right! What matters most is that we are convinced in our hearts that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the only true God and is Lord of all. It's important for you all to understand that I'm not suggesting we use them as some sort of magic spell or rote hocus-pocus to manipulate God or our circumstances. Heaven forbid! God knows our hearts and He knows when we're sincere or when we're trying to twist an event to our favor by the improper and disrespectful use of His name(s). No matter how much we know, we must remain vigilant to not use His name(s) in vain! Please keep this in mind: The reason God gave us His names and the purpose of this Bible study is not so we can throw His name around as though we would be able to impress God or others with how 'smart' or 'godly' we are. But God said, "I am Yahweh" at least 160 times in the Old Testament, so it's apparently important to Him that we know who He is as revealed in His names. I am convinced that this knowledge will result in us going fully into the fire of God, delving deeper into His Heart, and wholeheartedly pursuing holiness. Not just knowing about Him as some are content to remain but drawing closer to Him as He passionately pursues us, removes the veil from our understanding, and reveals to us all that He is and wants to be in our lives! Or, as Rev. Dr. Nathan Stone wrote: "...we will glorify [God] and enjoy Him only in proportion as we know Him." "...not very many people know much about the person of God as revealed in His names. Surely a study of these names should be a most profitable way of increasing that knowledge." I hope this helps to clarify my position and not confuse you even more. I am so passionate about sharing the message God has laid on my heart, but it's sometimes very difficult to communicate that passion in writing. I pray that the Holy Spirit of the one true living God will be in these teachings and that we'll all be drawn into a more intimate relationship with Yahweh, the sovereign covenant-keeping God, and Jesus, the Christ. As we continue our study of God's names, I pray that God will ignite a flame within your heart and soul to fall more in love with Him through the knowledge of His names, and to share these teachings with others. Be blessed in Jesus' name, and remember: The Christian life is not what we do for God, but what God does for us! ![]() Adonai..&..Elohim "Let them praise the name of the LORD: for His Name alone is excellent; His glory [is] above the earth and heaven." Psalm 148:13 (KJV) Editor's Note: As there is considerable variance among Bible scholars as to former customs, usage, and translations of the various names of God in the Bible, the neutrality and factual accuracy of this article may be disputed. These articles are a summation of those ideas and conclusions on which most scholars agree. Did you know that Adonai and Elohim are plural Hebrew nouns? Two common names of God in the Biblia Hebraica (Hebrew Bible) are "Adonai" which is Hebrew for "Lord", and "Elohim" which expresses concepts of divinity (i.e., "God"). Technically, the word "Adonai" is the plural form of "Adon", meaning "my lord"; and the name "Elohim" is the masculine plural form of "Eloah". The singular Adon was used by the Phoenicians for their pagan god Tammuz and is the origin of the Greek name Adonis. The ordinary feminine singular word "Eloah" refers to the pagan polytheistic notion of multiple gods, or to powerful men or judges (Exodus 21:6 "...then his master [eloah] shall bring him to God, and shall bring him to the door or to the door-post, and his master [eloah] shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever."). Since Adonai and Elohim are written in the plural form, many Christians have used this as a foundation on which to build the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. However, while these names are written in the plural form, they regularly employ singular verbs in Hebrew grammar and are singular in usage. Therefore, acting as singular nouns with singular verbs, many believe these names represent a plural of majesty, perhaps pointing out that this one God embodies all the attributes of the many pagan gods worshipped by other peoples. Adonai (Hebrew: Adonay) was used as a substitute for the name Yahweh (YHWH). If you'll recall, last month I told you that the Tetragrammaton YHWH appears approximately 6000 times in the Hebrew Scriptures. To avoid violating the commandment "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain" (Exodus 20:7), sometimes Adonai was used as a substitute for Yahweh (YHWH) or the vowels "a-o-a" were inserted between the letters "YHWH" to remind people to not pronounce the name "Yahweh". Adonai (Lord) means "master", "owner", or "sovereign ruler" and generally denotes the authority and position of God. Adonai is first used in Genesis 15:2 where Abram asked, "Lord Yahweh [Adonai], what will You give me, seeing I go childless...?" The word Adonai, in reference to God, occurs 300 times in the Old Testament especially in Isaiah, Ezekiel (200 times), and Daniel (10 times in the 9th chapter). It is usually written "Lord" in most English Bibles, "Jehovah" in the American Standard Version (ASV) of the Bible, and "Yahweh" or "Lord" in the online World English Bible. Primarily, the name Adonai stresses man's relationship to God as his Master, Authority, and Provider. Some examples of where the name "Adonai" is used...
Elohim is the first name for God used in the Bible. Elohim is the name of God that occurs first in Scripture in Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth." The name occurs 2,570 times in the Old Testament: 32 times in Genesis; and almost exclusively in Ecclesiastes, Daniel, and Jonah. Elohim was often used in place of "YHWH Adonai" to avoid duplication of the name "Adonai" whenever the Hebrew compound name "YHWH Adonai" appeared in Scripture. The name "Elohim" is used in Scripture when emphasizing God's might, His creative power, and His attributes of justice and rulership. It denotes the power and pre-eminence (conspicuous glory) of God and is especially used in relation to God's sovereignty, creative work, and mighty works for Israel. Variations of this name include "El", "Eloha", "Elohai" (my God) and "Elohaynu" (our God). In the Pentateuch the name "Elohim" portrays God as the transcendent Being, the Creator of the universe. Some examples where the name "Elohim" is used...

![]() Creatively fresh and unique, the songs of The Secret Place are simple, intimate expressions of spontaneous prophetic worship |
by Rev. Dr. Nathan Stone The first question in some of our catechisms is, "What is the chief end of man?" and the answer is, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever." But we will experience God in such fashion and we will glorify Him and enjoy Him only in proportion as we know Him. The knowledge of God is more essential for the Christian, and indeed for all the world, than the knowledge of anything else yes, of all things together. The prayer of the Lord Jesus for His disciples in John 17:3 was: "And this is life eternal that they should know Thee the only true God, and Him whom Thou didst send, even Jesus Christ" (ASV). And speaking of this Christ, our Jehovah-Jesus, Paul sums up in Philippians 3:10 the great goal of his life: "That I may know Him." ![]() "I suppose if sin had not entered the world," says one writer, "acquiring the knowledge of God would have been the high occupation of man forever and ever." It is for a lack of knowledge of God that the prophet Hosea informs his people they are destroyed. And it is from the lack of knowledge of God that many are without spiritual power or life. There is little real knowledge in these days of the one, true God. There are many ways, of course, in which we may study God. The God who of old time spoke "unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners, hath at the end of these days spoken to us in his Son," the epistle to the Hebrews tells us. And this Son, Jesus Christ, while on earth said in the great discourse and prayer with God: "I have manifested Thy name unto the men which Thou gavest Me out of the world..." (John 17:6). "And I have declared unto them Thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith Thou hast loved Me may be in them, and I in them" (John 17:26). True, it is in the face of Jesus Christ we best see the glory of God; yet while we are in the flesh we can only know in part at most. And it behooves us to know all we can learn of God. All the Scriptures are profitable to us for instruction and edification, but perhaps not very many people know much about the person of God as revealed in His names. Surely a study of these names should be a most profitable way of increasing that knowledge. When Moses received a commission from God to go to His oppressed people in Egypt and deliver them from bondage, he said: "When I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, the God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, 'What is His name?', what shall I say unto them?" (Exodus 3:13). ![]() Now the word "God" or even "Lord", as we see it in our English Bibles, conveys little more to us than the designation of the Supreme Being and Sovereign of the universe. It tells little about His character and ways. Indeed we cannot say all that the mysterious word "God" means to us until we know more about Him. And we can know little of what the word "God" means until we go to the language from which the word God is translated, the language which is the first written record of the revelation of Himself, the language in which He spoke to Moses and the prophets. Now a name in the Old Testament was often an indication of a person's character or of some peculiar quality. But what one name could be adequate to God's greatness? After all, as one writer declares, a name imposes some limitation. It means that an object or person is this and not that, is here and not there. And if the Heaven of heavens cannot contain God, how can a name describe Him? What a request of Moses, then, that was that the infinite God should reveal Himself to finite man by any one name! Even so, the Old Testament contains a number of names and compound names for God which reveal Him in some aspect of His character and dealings with mankind. by Moody Bible Institute of Chicago Click here for a print-friendly copy of this article |

We will never see this again in our lifetime . . . nor will the people of the next 50-to-1000 lifetimes! Mars, the 'Red Planet' is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close may in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the past 5,000 years; and they speculate it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. To the naked eye, Mars will look as large as the full moon. ............![]() Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10:00 P.M. and reach its azimuth at about 3:00 A.M. By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30 A.M. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. No one alive today will ever see this again! Submitted by Paul & Mary Stratton |
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 The Lord declares that His grace is sufficient for every painful situation we will ever encounter. Because of His abundant goodness, kindness, and love for us, we do not have to succumb to discouragement, give up hope, or walk away from His plan. We will know God’s grace is working in us when... We have the strength to persevere. Through the indwelling Holy Spirit, God releases into us His supernatural power so we might endure (Acts 1:8). A spirit of confidence in Him is ignited within us. Grace awakens our hearts and minds to believe God will turn our troubles into something beneficial and beautiful (Romans 8:28). We have a sense of His presence with us. When grace is at work, we will be conscious of the Spirit’s abiding support. Our focus shifts from our trials to God. Grace helps us shift our attention from our situation and emotions to God’s sufficiency. We trust that God will bring us through this and not just barely through, but with deeper intimacy and greater faith at the end. We are assured of God’s sovereignty. He knows our frailties and has promised to limit trials to what our weaknesses, strengthened by His power, can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). The apostle Paul had been through shipwrecks, imprisonments, and beatings difficulties far worse than most of ours. He didn't quit because he drew on God’s grace and found it sufficient for every circumstance. Where do you need an infusion of grace in order not to give up and walk away? When I was back in the U.S. in April, I received a few offerings of cash and gifts for my own needs as well as to bless the children of the ministries associated with My Redeemer Lives. Here are photos of Pastor Nireekshana and Swarupa's Sunday School children who gratefully and joyfully received your gifts of toy cars, hair barrettes, colorful pens and pencils, chocolates, cash (for the older children) and handmade butterflies. .......... ..........![]() Left: Children greeting me with English songs. Center: Linda distributing handmade butterflies to children 'called' to pray for Pakistan. Right: As many of the children as possible squeezed and pushed their way in to sit with me for a photo. These 30-40 precious souls ranging in ages from 6 to 19, listened attentively as I gave a short lesson on the name of God. Not knowing that several of the children were Hindus, I taught that there's only one true God, the God above all gods, and that His name is Yahweh. I also explained that the word "Hallelujah" actually employs the two words "Hallelu" and "Yah" "Yah" being the shortened form of God's name. Later when we prayed, we could audibly sense their understanding, as the manner in which they pronounced "Hallelujah" had changed from "Hal-LAY-lujah" to "Hallelu-YAH!" There are other children in two orphanages who will receive small gifts and chocolates on your behalf. I'll share their photos, too, in future newsletters. Thank you, saints, for your support! Please pray for Nireekshana and Swarupa's ministries and the children whose lives are being touched and transformed by the love of Christ. |

From: Ted Haggard, President, National Association of Evangelicals, Washington, DC In March 2006, the National Association of Evangelicals passed a resolution calling for specific action to double the size of church youth groups. This resolution, titled "Engaging and Empowering a Young Generation", was based on a strategy developed by youth pastors from various denominations who gathered at the Great Commission Roundtable. As one of the core tenants of this resolution, September 2006 was designated National Youth Awareness Month (NYAM). The group decided to use Ron Luce as a point ministry for this effort. To access Luce's resources, go to www.BattleCry.com and learn more about the BattleCry Campaign and the BattleCry Leadership Summits. Encourage your leaders to attend one of these upcoming summits; these are high-level pastoral briefings where your leaders will hear about the current state of teens in America and what we can do to prevent churches from experiencing massive loss in future years. For the sake of our youth, our churches, and our nation, let's utilize the BattleCry resources and have every church within our sphere of influence participate in National Youth Awareness Month this September. Only in America can a pizza guy get to your door faster than an ambulance. Why do slow-down and slow-up mean the same thing? Why are wise man and wise guy opposites? Why is it that when stuff goes on a truck it's called a shipment and on a boat it's called cargo? Why do we drive in a parkway and park in a driveway? Why do we press harder on things when we know the batteries are dead? If we get corn oil from corn and olive oil from olives, where does baby oil come from? Maybe it's true that life begins at 40. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out. There are three signs of old age. The first is loss of memory, the other two I forget. Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get tired. |

Reported from Nairobi, Africa A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with another tsunami survivor, a giant century-old tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa. ![]() The hippopotamus, nicknamed "Owen" and weighing about 300 kilograms (650 pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, 2004 before wildlife rangers rescued him. Ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who's in charge of Lafarge Park remarked, "It is incredible. A less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with being a 'mother'." After it was swept away and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on the tortoise and established a strong bond. "They swim, eat and sleep together," the ecologist added. "The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive, as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added. This story shows that our differences really don't matter when it comes to finding comfort or giving comfort to another. We need to start looking beyond our differences and find a way to walk the path of life together. |

Not Another Learning Experience! Joan, who was a rather well-proportioned secretary, spent almost all of her vacation sunbathing on the roof of her hotel. She wore a bathing suit the first day, but on the second, she decided that no one could see her way up there, and she slipped out of it for an overall tan. She'd hardly begun when she heard someone running up the stairs. She was lying on her stomach, so she just pulled a towel over her rear. Excuse me, miss," said the flustered Assistant Manager of the hotel, out of breath from running up the stairs. "The Hilton doesn't mind your sunbathing on the roof, but we would very much appreciate your wearing a bathing suit as you did yesterday." "What difference does it make?" Joan asked rather calmly. "No one can see me up here, and besides, I'm covered with a towel." "Not exactly," said the embarrassed man. "You're lying on the dining room skylight." |

About 'Niceness' 'Niceness' . . . is an excellent thing. We must try . . . to produce a world where as many people as possible grow up 'nice'; just as we must try to produce a world where all have plenty to eat. But we must not suppose that even if we succeeded in making everyone nice we should have saved their souls. A world of nice people, content in their own niceness, looking no further, turned away from God, would be just as desperately in need of salvation as a miserable world and might even be more difficult to save. For mere improvement is not redemption, though redemption always improves people even here and now and will, in the end, improve them to a degree we cannot yet imagine. God became man to turn creatures into sons: not simply to produce better men of the old kind but to produce a new kind of man. C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) [More about C. S. Lewis...] Back to top |

Editor's Note: I have a dear internet friend who has recently chosen to share her journal writings about her evangelistic opportunities. Her stories and thoughts have blessed me greatly, and now I would like to return the blessing by occasionally sharing her thoughts with you. One thing is clear, the only gift we have to give the world is to pass along the love God gives to us. We love because we are loved by our God. That's what sets Christians apart from all the spiritual pursuits in the world. Our God individually and personally loves us. What an amazing gift! What a wonderful gift we have to give! I have been thinking about a kid named Anthony lately and want to share. One hot August night I was with several outreach team members scattered around the area of MacArthur and Millman in Peoria. I had talked to several local people in the course of the evening and it was now well after dark, and the street was busy with loud cars and foot traffic. Taking in the sights and sounds of the night, I was leaning against a building that held Tony's Liquor Store, a convenient store of sorts with tough, cautious men behind the counter and five bullet holes in the front window glass. There were many kids out and several boys on bikes racing around laughing and having a good time, shirts open and flying in the breeze. Everyone was glad to have some relief in the night from the heat of the day. Out of nowhere one boy pulled up in front of me on his bicycle and wanted to ask me a few questions. "What are you doing here?" is always the first one. I had to smile as I considered that this red-haired grandma probably did look a bit out of place. "I've come to see you" is always my answer, and it's more true than he knows. ![]() I've learned humbly over the years that every time someone makes a connection with me in this situation, someone else sometime before has taken the time to pray for that person. We seem to walk on a blanket of prayer laid down by other people many times praying grandmas or grandpas or mothers, or maybe a Sunday School teacher or Youth Pastor. I just get the opportunity to be a piece of the answer to other people's prayers. Well, I thrust out my hand and introduced myself. It turns out this young boy's name was Anthony. He was about 12 years old and had suddenly pulled away from his friends full of curiosity and questions. "Why are you standing here? What are you doing? What's your name?" I was delighted as he pulled the gospel story out of me. Like a perfect piece of ripe fruit, he was falling off a vine into my hands. We had a wonderful conversation as he began to grasp the wonder of what Jesus did for us and the magnitude of the love our God has for us. Abruptly he made a choice. "I want to have Jesus in my heart," he said. "I want Him to be my friend forever!" We talked on and held hands as he straddled his bike and we began to pray to ask the Lord to give Anthony his heart's desire. Just then something very unusual happened. The other boys who he was riding with suddenly noticed us and started riding by fast, sweeping in, almost hitting Anthony as they brushed by. Then they started yelling in taunting voices, "Good-bye Anthony!" "Good-bye Anthony!" over and over as they sped past recklessly in the street and sidewalk around us, nearly missing him. Anthony was unphased; we continued praying. Just as we said "Amen" and ended the prayer, sealing his new life in Jesus Christ, the boys disappeared as quickly as they had come. Peace returned. Everything seemed different, brighter, happy. It was obvious to me that there was unseen rejoicing around us. Anthony's smile was ear-to-ear and we hugged, as I showed him churches in the neighborhood who would welcome him. He realized that just as someone had prayed for him, he needed to pray for his friends, that they would find the Savior, too. What a special joy for me to watch him ride home in the darkness waving back and smiling. Those boys shouted 'good bye.' I said and still say, "Hello, Anthony!! Welcome to the Kingdom of the Lord our God!" So many scriptures jumped to life as I watched him. How very striking that those boys shouted 'good bye' to the old as it left. II Corinthians 5:17: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." I believe the other boys instinctively knew what was transpiring in the Spirit. Isaiah 9:2: "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light." Ephesians 5:8: "...for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light." ![]() The boys sensed the presence of the Lord, they sensed their friend would never be who he was, that he would become new. How amazing that out of the mouths of children are perceived such truths hidden from most. That Anthony came to me and asked me all he needed to know, brings to life so much scripture; and that Anthony recognized me in the Spirit as someone to ask. II Corinthians 5:20: "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God." Or in the Message version: "We're Christ's representatives. God uses us to persuade men to drop their differences and enter into God's work of making things right between them. We're speaking of Christ Himself now: Become friends with God; He's already a friend to you." Anthony, like so many others, is no work at all to talk to. He was looking for someone who would talk to him about the Lord. He is such an example of a ripe harvest. My only work was in getting there; being there was a joy. John 4:35b, "Behold I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are ripe for harvest."
God's richest blessings to you, Anthony, wherever you are! He will never leave you or forsake you, you are His precious treasure, purchased at a great price. I pray you realize God's will for your life and walk in it. Thank you, Lord, for Anthony and for the humbling opportunity to hold his hands at his second birth, in You.
